Bregenz: opera between the lake and the mountains

View from Pfänder to Bregenz
Bregenz is a small Austrian town at Lake Constance. It is famous for its opera festival with the biggest stage in the world built onto the water. You can see the festival grounds in the photo above - it's the black construction in the lake.

Lake and the stage for Carmen in the back
Opera festival was the main reason why we decided to go to Bregenz. The tickets are sold out quite quickly, we booked ours half a year before, same with the accommodation. The opera (Carmen) was fantastic and really spectacular. I think it will not be the last time we visit this festival.

Since Bregenz area is really nice, we actually stayed for 3 nights and explored the surroundings - the Alps in Austria and Lindau in Germany. There will be separate posts about both.

Bregenz harbor
As I already mentioned, Bregenz is a small town. It is possible to see everything within one day, we spread the sightseeing out on two days. The first day we visited the museums, the second day we went up to Lägern mountain with the cable car and hiked back down. Since it was really hot summer day, we spent the rest of the day at the public beach.

Bregenz Art Museum
Bregenz Art Museum (Kunsthaus) has at the moment amazing exhibition on by Argentinian artist Adrian Villar Rojas. If you have a chance, go and see it.

Cow bells at Vorarlberg Museum
Vorarlberg Museum is located very close to the Art Museum. It has a permanent display about the history of the region and at the moment the temporary exhibition is about Roma and Sinti people in Austria with the focus on discrimination. It is a nice museum and they have all the information also in English.

Martinsturm is a tower that hosts a very small museum about the town history. Unfortunately everything is in German only. It is still worth going because you can enjoy the view from the top of the tower and there is a nice chapel with frescos on the ground floor.

If you are in Bregenz then definitely go up to Pfänder. The views are worth it! The hike down is pretty steep and occasionally wet but it offers nice views to the lake and some small waterfalls in the forest. Here are some photos.
